The superstition around Vampires has been around since the Middle Ages. In fact, because of the plague that was decimating the citizens of Europe, vampires became the reason for the deadly disease.

The disease evidently caused bleeding mouth lesions and people at the time saw this as an indication of vampires having killed the person.

As well, people who were unwell mentally were often accused of being a vampire.

There is a condition called porphyria, which can cause skin blisters when exposed to sunlight. This disease has been linked to vampires.

Evidently, when someone who was thought to be a vampire died, they would be searched for signs of vampirism.

Often these bodies would have stakes thrust through their hearts to make sure they were actually dead.

It was also reported that these dead people would be decapitated or even burned.
